The Herreid Jacob A. Heinrich Post #170 is a member of the American Legion. Post 170 started in 1947 and follows the four pillars of the American Legion National HQ, Veteran's Services, National Defense, Americanism and Youth Education. The Post was named after Captain Jacob A. Heinrich. Captain Heinrich died July 15, 1942, at approximately 3 AM in Barracks 9 of the hospital area, (Japanese) Cabanatuan Prison Camp of malaria. Captain Heinrich was 36 years old at the time of his death. His body was eventually laid to rest at the Golden Gate National Cemetery, October 3, 1949, in Grave Number 1224. He was born in Campbell County, SD, September 10, 1905. The Heinrich's were the first Gold Star family of Herreid, SD.
